What is Concrete?

​The entire foundation of our business is created on concrete (no pun intended), but what is concrete exactly? At its basic level, concrete is a mixture of Portland Cement, water, and aggregates such as rock and sand that form a slurry that is easily poured and molded into shape. The slurry then hardens and forms an extremely durable stone-like material that is one of the most common building materials in the world. Concrete is used so widely that it is used roughly twice as much as steel, wood, plastics, and aluminum combined. 

The Basis of a Concrete Mix

As mentioned, a concrete mix is primarily composed of the below three elements:
               

• Portland Cement- Portland cement isn't a brand name, but the generic term for the kind of cement employed in virtually all concrete, just like stainless is a kind of steel and sterling a form of silver. It is the most common type of cement in general usage. The Portland cement and water forms a paste that hardens and binds the aggregates together.
• Water – Water in the mix chemically reacts with the cement and allows the concrete to be workable. The more water, in the mix, the weaker the concrete will be.
• Aggregates – Concrete mixes commonly include sand (a fine aggregate) and gravel or crushed stone (coarse aggregates).

What is a Concrete Admixture?

Used frequently by concrete contractors, a concrete admixture is a material added to the concrete mix to achieve a certain goal. For example, a retarding admixture delays the setting time of the concrete, giving the contractor more time to work during hot weather. A water reducing admixture reduces the amount of water needed in the concrete mix, while air entraining admixtures are used when concrete is exposed to freezing and thawing. These admixtures contain microscopic air bubbles in the concrete, and when the hardened concrete freezes the frozen water inside the concrete expands into the bubbles rather than damaging the concrete. Pretty cool, right?

How is Concrete Made?

​So, now that you know the ingredients of concrete, how exactly is it made? Most concrete production occurs in a large industrial plant of two different types: ready-mix and central mix plants. Concrete production is time-sensitive, and a wide variety of equipment is used to mix, place, shape, and retain the concrete during this time. A ready-mix concrete plant mixes all the ingredients except water, while a central mix plant offers more control of the concrete quality, but must be closer to the site where it will be placed.
                                   
To make concrete, the cement is mixed with the aggregates, admixtures, any fibers (used to make the mix stronger) and water. Mixing allows the cement to coat the aggregates evenly to produce an even result. The concrete must then be transported to the worksite via equipment like buckets, wheelbarrows, special trucks, or pumping. Next, the concrete is placed and compacted (to eliminate any air bubbles). Finally, the concrete is cured and kept moist for the next several days, to allow it to set and harden with the highest quality.
